It could be firmware 4.00 causing this, who knows, but then there's nothing you can do about it. Your savegame isn't corrupted or else it wouldn't even load.
Konami never released any updates for MGS4, the v1.0 on the BluRay disc is the final version of the game.
Turning on the upscaler doesn't do anything on an SDTV anyway, it's only for upscaling SD content on HDTVs so you can leave it off.
So honestly I don't know, maybe try playing the game on a HDTV with a hdmi cable and see if the problem persists.

Alright then, thanks for your reply. I'm happy to know i didn't miss any Konami updates. Just have to wait for their reply (still nothing), and maybe, just maybe, a new update from Sony will help. Oh well, as you say, there's not much to do about it. Unless anyone else has a suggestion lol.

I had a problem with the darkness, somewhere towards the end it froze on the loading screen, but it didn't crash to XMB, I needed to switch off my ps3.
The only thing that helped was starting over (i only had one save).

But if i remember correctly, MGS4 makes individual saves. So maybe you could load up a different, older save. Maybe one at the end of act 2, so you start out 'fresh' at act 3? It's worth trying, right

Restarting won't help because it doesn't freeze, it really crashes.

Unfortunately i have only one save file maybe because i don't use AutoSave And i have a gut feeling if i start over, the same thing will happen... maybe my only option is to format my HDD and then try starting over... (cus it HAS to be a hardware error, right???) i'll leave this as a final option though lol.
