I realize this may be a shot in the dark. but I'm trying to find out if my PS2 is modded or not without opening it up.
Its a 30001R and I don't remember where I picked it up, but I think it may be modded because there is a sticker (JMB SS) where the warranty sticker used to be and the same sticker is also on the bottom. I had modded console with stickers similarly placed before and I had to press the controller buttons in a certain sequence to play imported games.
    Any ideas?

Easiest way to check would be to just get a backup of a game you own and just see if the console can run it. You can use a PS1 or PS2 backup, it won't do anything to the console if it's not modded. If the console is still original it will only tell you that it can't play the disc. Sounds like it might be modded though.

    Hope this helped

Ok, I'll try that as soon as my wife and kids give me access to the TV.
Also what are the buttons you push to change the game region? or where could I find such a resource? I realize that it depends on the chip, but I haven't been able to find instructions for any chip really.
