Not sure if this belongs under technical or dongles but since it was the dongle that caused the technical problem I figure I'll start here.
Right... So I was completely new to the scene and bought aPS3Break not knowing that I need to be on 3.41 and at that time I was already on 3.6. So I tried following the instructions and even installing 3.41 via the stick and other sticks etc etc etc and obviously I got nowhere. However, while trying to change y firmware and using this stick, my blu ray drive stopped working. Up until that very morning my ps3 worked perfectly with 0 problems. I had no issue with discs taking long to load (like some people have reported), my drive wasn't making noises (like other reported), nothing It worked perfectly. Then I tried to install FW 3.41 and got nowhere but my Bly Ray drive just stopped spinning.
So then I read that my lens was burnt out. Just suddenly from working fine to being burnt out in 2 minutes???? Sounds dodgy.
The local repair shops I went to just say that since my drive is loading the discs but not spinning at all that my bly ray drive is busted and I will need to replace the entire unit. I was resigned to this fate and then, a few days ago, I saw a guy on youtube who ad the same issue. He put in the disc and with the cover removed you can see the disc didn't spin. He then did a few dongle swops and reboots and after about 3 swops and 4 reboots, BOOM he put the disc back in and the disc worked fine. Apparently the problem was that the disc drive had to be married to the motherboard and that somehow this connection was removed and this dongle fix of his solved this issue by re-marrying the two.
Unfortunately this video is very old and the software wasn't available (at least not that I could see) BUT it mentioned there in great big print that this should NOT be done on any firmware above 1.2x so apparently this is a very, very old trick. Unfortunately, since I figured this ps3 is completely busted now I didn't mind upgrading the FW since then and I am currently on the latest firmware. So now the question arises... If this truly is a case of the firmware and the blu ray drive having to be married, will buying a replacement drive fix the issue? I mean... how will I remarry them if I put in something completely different? Alternatively, if the issue is just a software fix then does anyone know what it is called or where I can get the software to fix my drive again???? That would be great!!!!
I am aware of the new NOR flasher (no idea what that is but something about flashing something with something... No idea what it does but I know it works and it will allow 4.0 to be downgraded to 3.55) and that that will allow me to enter the mod scene, but will it somehow help me marry my drive again?
What are my options for fixing this drive, basically. That is my question. I can't believe the drive just suddenly burnt out in 2 minutes after working perfectly and then suddenly being completely fried. I thought a drive replacement was the answer but then I saw it was a software fix, only to find out that the software was for a very old FW which made me worry about, if it is only a software fix that I need, then what point is there in replacing hardware when I don't have the software to make it work again afterwards... ow do I find out if the drive is busted or wether the drive and board are not married? How do I determine wether I need a SW flash or a hardware upgrade???
p.s. some background info:
Very first PS3 model (60Gb with PS2)
iMac (so no serial ports if required and not able to swop blu ray drives (if you are gonna suggest that) as it is my main source of income and I can't afford to mess around with it's insides)
Second PS3 is Slim 120Gb on OFW 3.56 (bought it in the hopes of being hackable and what do I get for my OFW??? just my luck, huh? :P )
