    I am the owner of a 1st gen PS3 80GB.

I have been reading about the different dongles available. I am on OFW 3.55 and would like to go ahead and Jailbreak my console.

I know that the Cobra cannot be used with newer games and that True Blue requires special patches to be made to the newer games to be playable.

Is there anyway to run these two together??? Or to alternate between them???

I have a 2nd PS3 that is still online and I use that for the newer games but would like to explore my options in getting the newer games to run on my older PS3.

    Thoughts or suggestions??

before you go and buy a dongle the first thing you need to do is install a custom firmware. I'd go with Rebug 3.55.6. You'll need the firmware from here
    REBUG 3.41.3 and 3.55.2 | Codename: REBUG

and the .6 update from here
    Rebug Update Package 0.4 (3.41.3) and 0.6 (3.55.2) | Codename: REBUG

    Next get multiman from here
    http://psx-scene.com/forums/f192/mul...hd-bdmv-72826/ (multiMAN - multifunctional tool for your PS3 (Game manager/File manager/FTP/AVCHD/BDMV))

    and bdemu2 from here
    http://psx-scene.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=38

Get yourself familiar with how custom firmware works, how everything is installed and how to make and run your backups first

You can't use the dongles at the same time. Each one needs it's own firmware to work. Here's a guide on how to set up easy swapping

I do have one suggestion. If you do get a TB then get the original and not one of the knockoffs. It may be a little more expensive but the guys doing the patches (PARADOX) release patches for them - not the clones. You'll save yourself money in the long run and the clones aren't compatible with all games

    To clarify:

Custom firmware will jailbreak your PS3 for free, but you can't play most 3.60 firmware games.

Cobra will allow you to play Blu-Ray PS1, PS2 and PSP backups in addition to the features of custom firmware.

True Blue will allow you to play most 3.60 firmware games in addition to the features of custom firmware.

You can't use Cobra and True Blue at the same time. Each dongle has a custom firmware that exists only to allow the dongles to work. If you have both dongles, you will have to install those custom firmwares every time you switch between dongles.

Regarding the advice above, I do have a background in electronics and know that with NAND/NOR flash memory there is only so many times you can "flash" it. By repeatedly switching between the different files, does it wear down or lessen the life of the PS3???

that is true, but you are supposed to be able to flash your console thousands of times. As long as you don't make a habit of flashing unnecessarily you'll be ok. It would probably be best to plan ahead. Will you be playing TB games for a while or need the retro support of the Cobra for a while

I would probably like the retro support better honestly.

I don't mind doing something like GameFly or Blockbuster used to have a thing where you rent all you want for about $20 a month.

I like to try new games out before buying them for my collection. I have been burned way too many times on my PC that shelling out $60 on a chance it might be good, it just doesn't cut it anymore.

When trying to install the 06 update package, my screen locks up and freezes. Is that normal??? I let it go for a little bit but then I reset the system and try again. Same thing happens.

Something I am doing wrong?? I followed the instructions, installed the PKG. Launched from GAME menu, hit Yes and then it locks up.

**EDIT: I got it. I was not waiting long enough.**
