Hey guys! I bought a PS3 60GB model here in the USA as soon as it launched. I left it in a closet ever since, waiting for a jailbreak to come out for it. Obviously this has already happened, and my PS3 is on 3.55CFW kmeaw.

I was quite confused to learn that my already jailbroken PS3 would still need a dongle if I wanted to play PS2 and PS1 rips from the internal hard drive. Most of my confusion comes from not understanding what the Cobra does that the jailbreak does not. I'm not even quite sure why I bothered to never touch my PS3 for so many years, only to have to buy a dongle anyway?

Regardless, I am very interested in the Cobra's feature of playing PS1 and PS2 ISOs from the hard drive. I did a bunch of research, and oddly enough it sounds like that even though my PS3 has the full PS2 inside it, when using the Cobra, it will emulate the PS2 as if it was the 80GB edition of the console? Is this true?

I am also reading if I want to play 3.60+ firmware games, I need the True Blue. That's fine, but is there no way to play PS1 and PS2 ISOs off the hard drive when using the True Blue? I'd rather not have to use two devices all the time. Especially since, as far as I can tell, I need to "upgrade" my PS3 firmware to 3.55 Cobra or 3.55 True Blue (depending on which I buy). Is this the case? If so, is there harm in "installing" one of those OVER the CFW 3.55 kmeaw I already have on my system?

Thank you so much for any help! This site has been such a useful resource for YEARS and I am extremely appreciative of its existence!

Don't waste your money on the TrueBlue. Almost all the patches are available for everyone to use and there's more every couple days. The Cobra is used for PS1/PS2/PSP emulation. That you can't do without buying the dongle

No, if you have a Cobra, then it will make use of the PS2 hardware in your system for perfect 'emulation'.

Thank you! I had no idea. I had just checked up on Dead Rising 2 and all the replies I saw were "sorry! You can't play until someone learns a workaround so it works on 3.55".

Thanks! I guess I am just curious as to what the Cobra is doing to my PS3 that my already jailbroken PS3 cannot do? It's so strange to me (and I've been into console modding since the PS1 days).

Nobody knows. If anybody outside Cobra could figure it out, then there would be support for PS2 and PSX backups from the hard drive for all custom firmware. Ultimately, when you get a Cobra dongle, you are buying software. This software has been locked in the Cobra dongle for a year and a half and nobody's been able to crack it.

FYI, Cobra also supports PSP games, playing split files from the external drive, and other features too.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Really, really helpful.

I am going to order a Cobra.

Only thing I am wondering. I am on 3.55CFW. I have to change to 3.55 by Cobra, right? Can I update right from the CFW to Cobra? Or do I have to revert back to the stock 3.55 firmware?

Just to be safe, go back to official firmware, then install cobra custom firmware.

One more Cobra limitation to note: PS2 back ups only work from the internal hard drive. PSX and PSP can work from either internal and external.

That's cool! I prefer the internal hard drive anyway. I would imagine for rips of PS3 games it's faster to use the internal drive than USB, no?

Is there a repository somewhere of these patches to make games run on 3.55? Or is asking that frowned upon around here?

Finally, what's a safe way to go from 3.55 CFW back to stock so that I can safely go to 3.55 Cobra?

For backups speed on internal or external HDD is not important.
The simple way found in WEB patch of game what you want.
Safe way to update to Cobra CFW is under PS3 recovery menu and it does not important on which FW you is.
