Hello all, new guy here!
Hello all, new guy here! –

Hello everyone! I'm new to the PS scene and console gaming and modding. My first console and modding experience was just recently with an original Xbox (sorry PS owners
) that I modchipped with a Xecuter X3 and installed a 300GB hard drive in. It is running XBMC and is networked using a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router flashed with DD-WRT and set up as a client bridge.
Okay, back on track! I just dug out my son's old PS2 rig and cleaned it up and took it for a spin. It is a plain jane SCPH-39001 PS2 with 1 Dual Shock 2 controller and a Sony PS2 8Mb memory card. He still had some games left, GTA Vice City, GTA III, Killzone, MGS2 - Sons of Liberty, MGS3 - Snake Eater, MGS3 - Subsistence, Psychonauts, Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of the Colossus. I though it would be fun to mod the PS2 as a companion to the Xbox, so I'm here trying to learn about what you all are doing to the PS2!
So far, I've got a Sony wireless adapter coming, mainly so I can get a hard drive installed in it, but it will also be jacked into the Linksys client bridge. I've got an 80GB hard drive that I salvaged from a computer repair job for my neighbor that I'm going to put in it. I think I'm going to soft mod it, at least for right now, and maybe try installing a modchip later if there any still available. I know it's hard to find chips anymore for the Xbox so I assume it's the same way for the PS2. That's what I get for getting involved in modding so late!
I want to load and play games off of the hard drive so I need to familiarize myself with what softmods are available. I have got FTP setup already so I can transfer files back and forth to the Xbox but I've also got programming where I can rip disks directly to the Xbox HD using the Xbox's DVD drive. Anything like that on the PS2? Also, has anyone used the Optical out on the PS2? How's the quality?
Well, I've got a lot to learn here and I've got a lot of reading to do!
I will keep everyone updated on my successes (or failures) and hope that you all won't mind a newbie asking dumb questions!
Thanks for letting me ramble on!
Mike

Thanks for the welcome Amp! Modding the PS2 is a little different than the Xbox but, I think I'm starting to understand some of it!
I look forward to hanging around here and picking all your brains!

Decided to go with the FreeMCBoot softmod. I found this rockin' tut where you basically make your own CogSwap disk using a ISO of a PS2 game and injecting the cogswap code into the boot file. I used GTA III and it worked like a charm! Made it into the UlaunchELF menu but, when I tried to launch the FMCB install, it said there was not enough room on the MC to install it. The boy has some save games on the MC that he wants to keep so I'm on hold now until I can get another MC.
