Swapping/Replacing BD-ROM Drives
Swapping/Replacing BD-ROM Drives –
This is probably in the wrong section, but was the closest I could find for the topic.
I have been reading a fair amount about swapping the BD drives in the PS3, but most threads and posts are fairly outdated now.
Simply put, is there an easier way of swapping BD drives now, or do we still need the original logic board which came with the console?
Are we now able to get the keys and use any (compatible) drive as a replacement, much the same as the 360?
A side question: If a different logic board is hooked up, will an update still fail the same way if NO logic board is connected? If the above is not possible (yet), is there the slightest chance a system update will re-marry the logic board to the connected console?
Service mode does allow re-assigning of blu ray drives. However, I don't believe we have those setup files to do so. Someone would need to do some hackery or leak those files.

1. Retrieve key from registry, write key to BD drive.
2. Retrieve key from BD drive and change key in registry.
Either way would require read/write access to the BD drive flash, assuming that the keys are stored in the registry in the first place.
Yes i would like to know if its possible also.. im assuming u have bad blueray??
I'm about to take the Laser from my 80GB ps3 and put it into my 60GB deck.
80GB 101 deck vs 60GB 100 deck = a lot of differences,
But ONLY the Laser DOES physically FIT in the older deck, and the Ribbon Cable is the only thing that matches up too. Anyone done this before?
Hasn't sony been replacing the Single lens' with the newer 2 separate lens' anyway?
To clarify, my 80GB has the newer laser with 2 separate lens; one for Blu, one for DVD.
My 60GB has ONE lens that does Both Blu/DVD.
I've heard many stories about people replacing the old laser in a 60GB with the same old single lens type, working for about 5min before it breaks again...
Controller board issues may be? I'm gonna try it tonight. Any guidance/experiences are greatly appreciated...
Sell the laser that won't work for you and buy the correct laser with the cash. I have an 80gb with a bad laser, if your just gonna throw it away like that by installing it in a 60gb and ruining it, you might as well send it to me, lol.
Do you know this for a fact? or do you just want to buy my laser?
A little of both, lol. What are the model numbers of both ps3s? I'll find out for you if anyones successfully gotten em swaped and working.

I have read that the Blu Ray serials need to match up with your respective model number, but with these recent advances in the HV Priviledges in Linux, or some other means.. Is it possible for me to marry my CECH2001A's BluRay Drive to my CECHG01 being that my CECHG01 is on 3.55 CFW, CECH2001A is on 3.60 OFW. And if so any pointers on doing so? Any help is very much appreciated.
EDIT: The reasoning behind this is that my CECHG01 on 3.55 CFW has a broken BluRay drive, And my 3.60 CECH2001A has a working drive but I don't want to risk a permanent brick without more information..
I've exactly the same problem
