how a cheat device works is it places a routine in memory that writes custom values to specified memory addresses. this cheat device routine has to be hooked into a frequently called routine in the game for it to work. so every time that routine is called upon it does whatever it is supposed to do but it also executes the cheat device routine before returning to the caller function. the master code is what hooks the cheat routine.
So how is it that older games didn't often need Master Codes? Did the device use a default hooking address?
