Whats the Maximum Size a PS3 can handle for a HDD?
a yottabyte, google it.
actually ps3 can handle 1tb or more i think, but the reason we cannot use 1tb or more because those HDD's are more than 2.5 inches, so it wont fit inside the ps3 without any "inside" work of the ps3 with tools. So if you dont want to rearrange your ps3 i would suggest you get a 720 gb HDD or lower, because those are 2.5 inches.
Ps3's support laptop internal hdd which are 2.5 inches, not more, not less. Personally i use a seagate 500 GB 2.5 inch HDD, you can buy a Western digital 720gb also, you call....

It really depends see most backup managers and the ps3 itself only recognize FAT32. If you are able to get something in the 1TB to format to FAT32 then it should work. I have a 1.5TB external formatted to FAT32 using PS3 Windows Tools.
The internal PS3 HDD can be as big as 2tb, BUT; any 2.5 hdd over 750gb will be bigger than 9mm thick and wont fit in the hdd casing.
