through a usb will be ok and simple. network update is not available because you're already on 3.55. Just download a ofw 3.55 and use usb update.
    put the .pup into /ps3/update/

No it's not impossible. Just put the original 3.55 FW on a usb and install through the XMB. Anyone saying it doesn't work isn't doing it right. Google is your friend.

It still doesn't work. I put the pup file in the PS3/UPDATE folder then go to update via media storage and the ps3 can't find it at all.

Make sure the drive or the pen drive you are using is FAT32 formatted and that you put the PS3 folder in the root of the drive. also make sure you are using the correct firmware file. Alternative is to connect to psn and update via the internet.
