I don't know if this is the right topic or not.

Can someone explain me the concept of this so called dongle wich somehow turns your ps3 in a game backup-playing device? This may sound stupid but there's so much information about all kinds of dongles and I'm really getting lost with all this information.

When I buy for example the "PSJailBreak2" is it ready to use or do I need to install something on this dongle to make it work?

I just want to play backups on my PS3 that has 3.50 firmware and I can't seem to figure out what I need to buy and how to use it.

As you can see I'm a real n00b here and I was hoping someone could give me some help understanding the art of jailbreaking (because that's wat we're actually doing here, right?) my firmware 3.50 PS3

    Thanks in advance

Your reading the wrong information. In order to jailbreak a ps3 with firmware newer than 3.41, you would use cfw (custom firmware), not a dongle. Because your a n00b, your gonna want to be on kmeaw's cfw for 3.55, which is the most compatible cfw version. It allows you to run payloads (enabling backup managers) and update the payloads without re-flashing your console, allows unsigned code to run, and has ~0% brick risk. Your gonna want to install 3.55 OFW, then 3.55 kmeaw cfw. A guide is below...

Once that's installed, you'll be able to install all the homebrew, emulators, and backup managers you want. For the backup manager I'd recommend multiman. It's updated more than any other manager, has all the functions you'll need to copy games built in, and is compatible with more games than any other backup manager. Link to it is below...

EDIT: Just make sure you don't accidentially update to 3.56 firmware, it's not able to be jailbroken/modded.

Destructor I'm a noob to the whole ps3 scene (freak of the ps2 scene ;p) I to was confused about the different methods of jailbreakng the ps3 but think I sort of have an understanding now. At first a programable USB chipset was used to allow unsigned code on 3.41 model systems. Then the whole hacking scene of the ps3 exploded and cfw installed via USB pen drives has replaced the so called dongle jailbreak. I to am on 3.50 and will be trying to install custom firmware and run backups over the weekend. I'll post back with more details of how I went. Information has been hard to find as everyone wants to make a dollar in this world and a lot of places lead you to believe you need to purchase their USB chip. I could be totally miss informed but fingers crossed I'm not
