I recently bought a USB cable. But I found out that it has a male and a female end. so it i can't just connect it directly from my pc to PS3. I need to connect it into say my external HDD's other end. then to my PS3.

Can I do it this way?

If I am understanding what you are saying (standard USB cable), the cable will connect to the USB port on the PS3 and the other end should fit the external HDD USB port.

In Comgenie, you can scroll down to "dev_usb006" (don't know if the "6" will be the same on yours, but it will be "dev_usb00*") and click on that to get into your USB HDD.

To use a connection from the PS3 to your PC, you have to have an ethernet cable. Best solution for this is by going through a router (if you have one). If you do not have a router, I think you will need a different type of cable (don't remember what it's called at the moment) to allow a direct connection between the two devices.
Doing it this way, you will also need BlackBox FTP or Multiman's FTP (not sure if Gaia or Rogero have FTP in them).

With what you are describing, the easiest way (without buying more cables) is going to be transferring files into the external HDD via PC and then connecting it to the PS3 and either transferring them into the internal or having the backup manager or emulator point towards the folder your files are in.
If you can use the external for primarily the PS3 stuff, I would recommend leaving the files on the external and pointing the BM to it (unless you swapped that 40 gig HDD in the new PS3 for something more reasonable ).

    Sooooooo.............did you get CFW going???

Yeah I did. I also bought a USB adaptor for that cable I got. I diden't know you could go LAN. Is it faster than FTP?

    Damn, that was QUICK!!!!!

I doubt it's any faster (I haven't had the chance to try it yet) as it's still being done through FTP (even though it might be considered a LAN connection by normal standards). Since it wouldn't be going through a router you might be talking in terms of milliseconds faster for the transfer of 20 gigs. Just not enough speed increase to worry over. Over a few thousand years it might add up to a few seconds (If you are transferring TB's of info ).

Soooo what are you running for CFW and BM?

    Very cool!

At the moment, it looks like Online may be dead until something new comes up (I know it sucks for you all that do online play).
Please just be patient with it. something is surely to come up within a few days.

I wanted to be a tester for the deal blazie had going, but didn't want to lose the use of my PS3 while I was still on a road trip. He and I pm'd about it but I had no idea that it was a full CFW until a few minutes ago!

Congratulations on getting the new system up!
    I gotta +rep for that!
