Visa - ps2 emulation still requires relatively high end computers to do, and ps3s simply don't have the computing power. The amount of optimization needed would be way too much work for even the best devs, and would still produce huge gaming complications. The reason why launch units were able to play ps1 and ps2 games is because they had the emotion engine in them, which is the hardware that would need to be emulated on a ps3 in order to play ps2 games. The only hope is that $ony patented a process to emulate the emotion engine within the SPUs of a ps3, which would enable all ps3s to be backwards compatible. However, since they have shown NO interest in backwards compatibility, its doubtful they would ever release it in a firmware update (though it would be nice for them to actually ADD a feature instead of removing them). The only way for you to get a ps3 that will play ps2 games is if you find and buy a launch era unit with backwards compatibility, which is going to cost you ALOT more than a used ps2 from a swap shop. Last time I looked they were over $500 ea. for backwards compatible ps3s.
