I am having the same problem. I go into recovery mode, tell it to upgrade to OFW 3.55 and it does fine but when I try to apply watangrza cfw it opens it but when it should install it, it tells me this cfw is already installed and doesn't apply it. This only happens on my older 60gb ps3 I have done this on three slims and all have worked just fine

Wether your going to the custom firmware or back to stock, the method is the same (as long as your on 3.55 ofw or cfw)....

Put the update pup file on a flash drive formatted to fat32, inside the folder PS3\UPDATE\
Boot the console to recovery mode
Do a system update to that firmware

If your on any type of cfw, flash back to ofw first.
