PS3 Problem after downgrade

Hello! Today I've downgraded my PS3 from 3.50 to 2.10 instead of 3.41 because then I was going to update to the official 3.41 firmware so that I won't lose Blu-Ray Playback.
I installed openiboot and idroid on my iphone 3g, put it into service mode, downgraded to 2.10 and kicked it out of service mode. After that I started the console to update it to 3.41 and it said that ps3 will rebuild the hard disk database. So I pressed OK. All good until it reached 16%. It's been on for 3 hours and it's still stuck.
So what are my options?, since I have 2.10 which does not have a recovery menu.
Can I solve this by taking out the ps3's hdd, connect to my PC and reformat it as fat32?
Or do I have to buy a new hdd ?

Do not format HDD in FAT32, because PS3 HDD have another FS(not fat32).
Put your console in service mode again. And try to format HDD from settings>system settings>format utility in service mode.

UPDATE: The format didn't work, so I updated it to 3.40 but not from the menu ( I used the downgrade method with the stick) and after I kicked it out of service mode the rebuilding database screen came up again, and now my hope was lost, but as soon as it started rebuilding it gave an error and said that the HDD must be formatted in order to work, So I pressed ok and DONE!! Finally, out of service mode with 3.40 version. Now I have to install the update to 3.41 and JB. Thank you all who tried to help.
