    Hello All,

I have been following the scene for a little while now, and need a little help getting started.

I have just purchased a spare ps3 to use purely for homebrew and playing backups.

It is a CECHG03 PAL model which for some reason contains a 60gb hard drive.

All the hardware works except the blu-ray drive. It has a disc stuck inside the drive and the blue light flashes.

    It has 3.50 OFW installed.

Now, can someone please explain step by step how I can go from 3.50 to 3.55 CFW.

And also, which CFW is most suitable for homebrew and playing backups?

Do I need to use the modified lvl2diag.self, to safely install 3.55 with a broken blu-ray drive?

    Thanks in advance,

    MCJeffsy

Download the 3.55 Official firmware Here. Then get a USB or anything and in the root of your USB make a folder named "PS3" then inside that folder make a folder named "UPDATE" and place the update file there then from the XMB go to system update through media store and boom you're on 3.55.

Then download kmaew custom CFW. and install multi-man on it. You don't need a modified lvl2diag. Multi-Man supports discless booting.

At first I was gonna say that some games can't do discless supposrt. Then I saw that you have a disc stuck in the drive. So you should be fine.

Thank you for the link to the instructions for installing 3.55 CFW.

I should be able to follow this without any issue.

My one fear is to do with the damaged blu-ray drive.

I am worried that when updating to 3.55 OFW it might not complete the update due to its error (blue flashing light)

Can someone please confirm that I will be ok to update?

The worst thing that could happen is I get stuck in an updating loop.

Please bear in mind that I bought this PS3 second hand and the warranty seal has been removed.

    Thanks

It will not freeze during the update unless the blu ray controller board is fried, which is not what it sounds like is wrong. It kinda sounds like someone loaded 2 discs at once, or screwed up the drive using the disc swap trick. Go ahead and update it, you shouldn't have any problems. The absolute worst case scenario has you using a dongle with a modified lvl2diag to boot it into service mode to fix it, which is still pretty easy, so have no fear updating. Just make sure you go with kmeaw's cfw, as it's the most compatible and will keep you from frequent flashing and/or bricking your console. A guide is below...

You will probably need to go to cfw in recovery mode because of the unit you have. It's the same thing I had to do.

Ok, so I decided to man up and take the plunge.

Firstly I installed 3.55 OFW with no trouble.

A very stressful wait as the progress bar crept its way to 100%.

And my first ever Ps3 update!

My other BC PS3 60gb is still on 3.15! lol

I then continue to use update to 3.55 kmeaw, and have to use Recovery Menu to get it to install.

I can now confirm that I am on 3.55 kmw!

    Oh yeah!

    Let the homebrew begin!
