Hey, your picking up this quick belikeike, already giving out good and accurate advice to another poster. BTW, the beer was a good idea last night, I cracked a couple last night myself, lol.
It sounds to me like you have a bad USB stick, which explains the MD5 hash failure and the data corruption errors. Get another USB stick and try with that one. You'll probably have better results.
@SoCoM_4 - belikeike is right, but theres more to it. Reverting back to OFW is only to go to Kmeaw's CFW, which doesn't require signatures, allows lvl2 peek/poke, and doesn't brick your system while allowing backups. It's also the one firmware that EVERY dev supports. Definetely the best of all (GH,KMW,WAN,WTG,KAK) 5 worlds (had to count them up there, jeez).
Thanks for all the help blazie151. I'll get a new USB stick next time I run into town. The one I have now is actually an old Sansa MP3 player, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I was able to run Geohot's FW patch with it just fine so I thought it would be ok. Maybe because the OFW is so large and Geohot's patch is so small also has something to do with the stick's data problem.
Nail on the head there. I've been saying "common sence isn't common anymore" for awhile. I'm happy to see that there are some people that saying doesn't apply to. Thx for restoring my faith in logic, lol. GH's patch is a very small amount of custom code, created as a patch for your existing firmware, which is why it can be installed on top of existing custom firmware, and why it had little to no brick chance; the file was so small it was less likely to get corrupted. Kmeaw's CFW is inside of a full update file, and much more likely to have people with corrupted or bad downloads, which is why the official guide has you check your MD5 hash.
Wow. What a mind job. After all my struggles with that MP3 player I was trying to use as a memory stick, I bought an actual USB Flash Drive and downloaded the OFW straight to it from Sony's website. I checked the MD5 hashes and they were an exact match. I entered recovery mode and put the stick in the right USB port on my 40GB fatty, pressed select + start to begin the process of updating the FW, and it tells me "no applicable data found." WTF? I figured maybe it was just slow in reading the data so I tried again, and again, and again. Same results. I tried putting the stick in the left USB port, BOOM! First try. It's finishing the installation process now. What a relief! Now I just have to figure out which is the best Custom FW to flash on it for playing my legit backups and homebrew. Blazie151 if you could be of some more assistance here I would appreciate it.
Definitely gotta go with kmeaw's cfw and the new multiman, its an awesome combo. Guide below...
Just make sure you turn off auto updating of system software since now 3.56 OFW is out. There have been reports of auto updates to CFW bricking consoles. Nice way for $ony to screw jailbreakers, brick their systems then claim its the standard brick risk or that it did it cause they're running modified files. End result is the same; $ony trying to brick as many as consoles as waninkoko and get away with it, lol.
