HI, a friends fat ps3 has got the dredded ylod can any1 tell me the best way to retrive his save data. I have reflowed 1 before but only lasted a couple of hours, so i hadvised him to buy a new and sell the yold on ebay but first i would like the saves of the hdd and wipe all the data his psn details. I belive he will get a better price if the warntey sticker is intact. any ideas?

I believe that the only way would be to reflow it again to get it working and then copy the saves. I don't think there is a way to do so with the system working

Does it have to be the same fw or not? I know this should work in "theory" can any confirm that they've done it and it works? Don't want to get him to bring it down and it don't work and look like a right tit.

I don't know what the right 'tit' looks like, but when I was using linux on the ps3 I would swap HDD's regularly, one for linux space and another for ps3 games. It does need to be on the same firmware.
OOOH never mind, If he just wants his PSN details he should just sign in and his account will still be active. you can activate purchased games on up to 5 ps3 consoles.
get him to tell you his sign in id and password, then create new user on your ps3 and sign in.
This is assuming your on OFW.
If your on CfW use filezilla and blackbox to retrieve the save games.
I'm going to do this tomorrow, as I had a ylod too and need to get some pictures off there.

I got 2 ps3 1 with ofw but the laser has gone, and 1 with 3.55 cfw so i'll try it on my cfw first. I Would prefer to format the hdd just incase he decides to sell it just to be on the safe side.

Bad news, I just tried and couldn't get it to work. It needs to reformat the harddrive. This is probably why there are so few responses.

I swaped my hdd from a bricked 60gb in too a 80gb model a black screen came up did'nt realy take much notice, put the original 80gb one back in and it said it was corrupt so it when through to the recovery mode and re-built the database (option 3) and the original work again.
i wonder if i put the 60gb 1 back in And try the same trick just to see if it works.
after all this my mate dnt realy care about his saves, I've got my teeth stuck in to this now so I'm gonna try and crack it
