My girlfriend bought a bigger HDD and was wanting to use the backup utility to backup her data before putting it in and we cannot find the backup utility in the settings section on rebug cfw. Are we overlooking something or is it not an option? The only solution that I can think of is to copy everything over to an external drive before installing the new HDD but I would rather use the backup utility to prevent corrupting any of the data. Could someone else try and see if they can find it? OR I know there is alot of smart dudes that frequent these forums and always are making some awesome applications, maybe one of yall could make a homebrew backup utility or something.....just an idea, and it would be really helpful.

    Thanks,

Bumped into this in a quick google search

An external PS3 hard drive upgrade will allow you to back up your entire PS3 ([Settings]>[System Settings]>[Backup Utility]>Back Up), but if you don't have one already it is a large extra investment for something that you will only do once. If you do decide to go this route, the external hard drive will need to be formatted to the Fat32 file system. You can use your computer to format your external hard drive, but it will wipe any existing data you have on the drive.

However, if your external hard drive size is over 32 GB, you will need to use a third-party program to format it to Fat32. To make it simple, you are going to want to start with an external hard drive that is formatted correctly to ensure that your PS3 backup works the first time.

Yeah. ive done it before on my ofw ps3 but can't find the option on the rebug console.

ive even tried switching to retail mode and retail xmb using the rebug selector and I still do not have the backup utility option.

Shouldn't matter if its there or not, since you should do ALL your backups from OFW. Switching back to OFW will not affect your data. Once your back on OFW the option will definitely be there. As a precaution, back up your user data folders through a file manager like comgenies or multiman, that way any psn activation data will be safe.

Thanks blazie, i'll give that a try.

she told me she tried to go back to ofw but it failed, i don't think she was doing it through recovery mode. I'll have to give it a try myself, thanks again.
