Why would they leave up that pup and remove all the rest of them??? I don't trust anything from $ony anymore, I think I'll use alternate download links, lol. For all we know they might try to slip us the 3.56 file instead of the 3.55 file (or tweak the 3.55 so it can't be used to install cfw afterwards).

No, the ps3 should set up the partitions before formating. The update must be crashing or not installing properly. Check the md5 hash of the update file on your usb drive, it should be ca595ad9f3af8f1491d9c9b6921a8c61. You can download the md5 hash program from any of the top 3 links here.

I check the MD5, matched with what you typed, put on usb, usb onto the ps3, select & start, found and installing update, slowly gets to 58% then speeds off to 100%, system restarts itseld annnnddd. .back to the recovery screen :/

Check the md5 hash AFTER you put the file on the usb drive. The last person that I helped with the same issue had a bad usb drive.

i had exactly the same problem like you do... tried everything, nothing worked until now. if u have a JB device just use the "downgrade" option from 3.55 to 3.41... after this u will have fully functional PS3 (dunno about BD movies cause i heard, there are some problem with this and i dont have any to check it) with 3.41 FW and formatted HDD...
