Thinking of getting 1st PS3
Thinking of getting 1st PS3 –
02-27-2012,09:59 AM
Hey everyone. I have been a 360 guy forever. about 2 years ago i stopped playing games, gad a little girl, married, etc etc. no time with new business. blah blah blah. So now, my wife is a stay at home mom and loves Netflix. The problem, as you all know, with the 360, you have to have a Gold account to play Netflix. So i was thinking of trading my 360 at gamestop and getting a PS3 with a Media Remote. This will also serve as a media center manager for all my 2gb of movies and music i have on my laptop and external drive.
here are my questions. i have a Vizio Soundbar thats connected to my laptop currently, through the headphone jack. sounds great but of course, not the best way of outputting the sound. i have no audio out on the back of my TV for some reason so this is going to be a tricky situation if there is not a way to use 2 RCA (red/wht) or headphone jack on the PS3. make sense?
also, is there a way to get SABNZB setup on the PS3 without modding it? i would like to NOT rely on my laptop to send movies over the network to the PS3 if i dont need to. But i use either Netflix or my laptop to play movies. I do not want to hack it because i hear Netflix will not work. true???
Lastly, even though this is a Play Station forum, am i making the right choice? wasting money and time? the main reason i am looking to for this is for Netflix for the wife. She is a stay at home mom and cant work the laptop too well with the iPhone connected to the laptop or keyboard gets buttons pressed from our little one, etc etc.
i want to make this as easy as possible for her and also allow me to get a nice blueray player at the same time
please now... the audio is a huge issue that i want resolved before i make the swap. also knowing that the Media Remote can be programmed to my izio Soundbar..
thanks everyone for your help!!

i found a picture and see an optical port for audio. this is perfect! just turn my soundbar up and then adjust the volume with the remote.
another question is, what if i get a 3.55< firmware... any way to downgrade?

the provided factory a/v cable can also be used for 2ch audio output... as well as the optical output. also, you can only do netflix from a CURRENT firmware ps3. although having a jailbroken ps3 would be nice, the firmware being current for netflix seems like a deal-breaker for you. lastly, an external hard drive or usb thumbdrive (either formatted to FAT32) can be plugged directly into the ps3 and accessed to copy into the ps3's internal hard drive. although my personal ps3 has a larger-than-stock hard drive, i also have an external hdd. makes it easy to load with movies from my laptop (or desktop). you could also have a NAS (network attached storage) that is dlna certified, and the ps3 will see that on your network to play from....

""External can be used to copy to the PS3's internal hard drive""
im sure you can not copy games there without being jailbroken, correct?
Also, Netflix IS HD correct? found a work around lastnight using PlayOn through my xbox 360 and it is not HD. Barely 480 to be honest with you and not too enjoyable.
One thing though, when I called GameStop to make sure they had a PS3 to trade my 360 and asked how much for my 360.. they said $50 (+40 towards trade in) and I got sort of upset with that price. So i am going to try an sell on Craigs or something.
I DO want a PS3 though, just cant justify the 50+40

the external hdd can be used to copy downloaded MEDIA content to the internal hdd of the ps3 - i wasnt talking about games. netflix does have hd content too, though not all of it is hd. and yes, there IS a workaround for netflix through a jailbroken ps3, but like you mentioned, the video quality is crap.
there are only a few benefits of going jailbroken on a ps3, as it sits right now. the ability to run different homebrews and to be able to backup older released ps3 games (pre-3.55 requirement) being the only real reasons. but like i mentioned in my previous post, if you want to run netflix properly, a jailbroken ps3 is NOT the way to go. it would be easy to setup "ps3 media server" or "xbmc" on any local computer on your network to serve the ps3 for streaming, if you didnt feel like having an external hdd connected directly or copying to the internal hdd of the ps3... but that only streams media content you have already downloaded.
as for your xbox360, other than your netflix requirement, it can also be network setup (ps3 media server or xbmc) to stream your 2Gb (did you mean 2Tb?) of movies & music. but i think you wanted to eliminate having a laptop or computer being online - right? you can always just connect the external hdd to the ps3 and have it access the movies/music directly, but on the condition that the external hdd be formatted to FAT32, not NTFS - a limitation of the ps3's file system.
you probably wont get anything near what you want for that xbox360, in a trade at gamestop. you can try selling on craigslist, but i doubt you'll get much for it on there neither... unless you sell it with EVERY game & accessory you ever bought for it. even with all of that, i think you'd be lucky to get $150 for it.

Thanks man. The only 2 complaints i have is non HD netflix through the work around (PlayOn) and i can not play x.264 movie types (720p). Other than that, i am happy since i am not a huge gamer or whatever. if i could get this fixed, i would settle with what i have. i will NOT pay M$ for a gold account.

how are you attempting to play the x.264 720p content right now? directly to the xbox360's usb ports? other than converting the format to something playable (mp4, perhaps?), your only solution would be a dlna server of some sort to host & convert the file on-the-fly. "ps3 media server" will do this for you. i'm assuming the x.264 content you're talking about not playing are mkv format? if you're stuck on playing directly from a usb hdd, there are plenty of format converters out there... "gotsent" being the one i most recently used....

everything is playing through laptop to xbox (or google tv in bedroom). I have PlayOn, PS3 media center and TVersity installed and trying to figure best option. PlayOn works for Netflix like i said but not HD (for those shows available in HD).
I just need to find a solution with what i have i guess. The PS3 isnt going to be an option until i get the 360 sold.

interesting... i used to have a similar setup with a dual core desktop running PS3 Media Server and it transcoded 720p bluray rips (mkv) to my ps3 just fine. of course, everything was on a WIRED network as well. the ps3 cant play mkv natively, much like the xbox360 cant, so having a decently powered cpu to transcode the stream while hosting is important. i guess if all else fails, connect your laptop directly to your tv (vga or hdmi) - that would do HD netflix and x.264 mkv's without a hitch!

Welp... sold the 360 yesterday for $280 including kinect, etc.. So i found a guy locally with a 365gb Slim PS3, 1 remote and cables. Asking $180 for all. Seems like a good deal, huh? Going to try and swing by there on my way home tonight.
Wanting to verify that on 3.66 I can not use Netflix, or 3.55 for that matter. He says its on 3.66 but I understand you can only use Netflix with the latest updates? Esectually i would like this to work flawlessly with Netflix AND be able to play "backed up games"
Is this possible with this 3.66firmware ps3???
