Is there already a fix for the RSOD (Red Screen Of Death)?

I'm about to buy a PS3 from eBay with 3.55
i have 2 PS3s FATS on my list which are signed as defect

1x with RSOD
1x with broken Blu-Ray (from Austria + 20€ shipping)

both auctions will end today and I'm wondering which error is easier to fix (if its necessary to fix the BR drive if i want to use it as "CFW PS3")
(both auctions are currently at ~30€ but the shipping from austria to germany costs 20€ which is pretty much) so i hope you could help me to decide :D

damnit i think i will choose the RSOD
unfortunatly the guy with the broken BR-Drive doesnt know whats wrong with it (the drive)

broken blu ray drives is not a problem now a days, cos of multiman....it can play 99% of games without disks now.

You should be able to fix a defective blu-ray (instructions can be found in the news section here) with a replacement drive.

I was originally going to suggest getting the one with defective BD but after doing some research on the RSOD...........I think you may be close to 50/50.

I would be looking at whichever is cheaper on the total cost and consider it a waste of money until the moment came that I had a fully functional unit.
I did the same type of thing with a 360 that had the RROD. Bought it for almost nothing (again, I considered it a waste of money when I bought it (just something to tinker with and see if I could repair it)) and had it up and running within 3 hours of walking into my house with it.


Something else to consider:
A unit with RSOD is absolutely unusable until it is repaired (which could be a completely free fix).
A unit with a defective BD could cost more money (if you want functionality of the BD) to get running properly.

If you are wanting something that can run "backups" that don't require a disc in the drive, the defective BD unit may be the way to go.

I would kind of lean towards the RSOD unit myself. I know the chances are pretty good that I could repair it for free and have a fully functional unit.

bluray isnt a issue either, as far as i know, you have to replace the laser or drive but you still need to make sure you marry it with the ps3. In other words, there is a piece on the old drive you gotta save and use it with the new one. There are SEVERAL youtube videos on how to accomplish that.

MM may be a great manager, however almost all the games require disc to be in as some games require it, regardless.

after some searching I've found a PS3 for 80€ which turns itself off after ~1 minute - is this a known issue?

So we got
-RSOD (it ends in 2 days, not today) = currently at 33+?€
-the one with f'ed up BluRay-Drive (ends in a few hours) = at 40+?€ [i guess these both wont end at less than 80€]
-the one which turns itself off for 80€
-well, i've asked some people with defect PS3s at eBay-Kleinanzeigen (idk what its called in english) if they are on 3.55
i've also found some with YLOD - is there already a reliable fix? i saw many videos with people putting their PS3's motherboards in a oven..

hope i will get one for less than 80€ :)

EDIT: oh yea and i've also found many PS3s which HDMI outputs seem to be broken (they say they cant see **** if they turn it on)

I would steer well clear of any RSOD PS3's if I were you. Just because one person over a year ago managed to fix his through recovery menu, doesn't mean this is the miracle cure for the RSOD machines, 99% of these are fu**ed for good unless returned to Sony for 160Euros. The 'red screen of death' appears for a number of reasons, the worst of which and most common seems to be corrupted NAND/NOR. the only way to fix this is with a NAND/NOR flasher attatched directly to the chip or on the test points on the motherboard. The only people i've heard of with this equipment is FailOverflow/Mathieulh and a couple of other devs.

There is no definitive way to fix a YLOD machine either other than reballing the RSX chip on the motherboard (costly). You could bake it in an oven, blast the hell out of the chip with a heat gun (check Gilsky's guide) but these, assuming you are successful and dont fry the board completely, are only temporary fixes at best. I have a 60Gb in my attic gathering dust because the YLOD appeared again and again.

Go for the Broken Blu-Ray option if you have to (personally i would just save and get a proper PS3), you can now re-marry other drives to the PS3 so in theory you could get a cheap second drive and stick it in.

Just offering advice from my own experience!

EDIT: Also bear in mind the cost of actually repairing a dead machine i.e parts/replacement drives etc. This might push you close to the cost of a decent second hand machine!

But i can't affort a second "100% working" PS3..

The only problem will be backing up my games (legally)
What do you think how much do i have to pay for a BR-Drive?


I've found a guy selling 2 PS3s 1x with f'd BR-Drive and second one which doesn't turn on but with working BR-Drive (i guess he doesn't know how to marry 'em)
But the problem with 90% of the auctions i'm monitoring will be that i don't know on which FW they are
And i don't want to ask them all :)

Buying another BR Drive is problematic as well because you don't know the condition (or if it's reading all discs properly at all). I had a machine with a bad drive that would read BR discs for around 25 mins or so before freezing. This meant I could only back up small games...The old 'Backup Manager' we all had last August, would take around 30 - 45mins for a 12Gb game to back up so i was screwed if I wanted to back-up large games. If you have a decent internet package you 'could' download them, then FTP them over to the PS3 (not that I condone this...;)

I have my eye on an eBay RSOD PS3 in my country because it's so cheap, solely due to this thread. Again, it's a gamble, some have had success, other's have not and you would need either a USB Jailbreak dongle (for the downgrader files) or you could do this with a PSP (guides/files are out there).

The best remedy to a bad BR Drive is to replace the lens, which is pricey and time consuming. You can get them from Hong Kong for around 50-60 Euro i think. Basically, what i'm saying is buying any broken PS3 for repair is risky and could be costly too, which is why i mentioned fixing it could cost more that the price of a working second hand machine. Edit: If you are going to buy an eBay PS3, always ask what firmware the machine is on. Don't worry about asking them all, it's your money. Version 3.56+ (obviously un-jailbreakable atm) was released at the end of January I think, and most people would have only updated to this to log onto PSN, so if the machine has been dead for a while, or the seller hadn't had the machine connected to the internet, you should be fine. 3.60 required games (Portal 2) have only just come out so they wouldn't have updated by disc.

i got the PS3 with the f'-BR @ 3.55 for 72€ (i've asked if he could lower the shippingcost a bit, he's gonna try) with DiRT and Kane and Lynch (i think i will sell them because i have DiRT 2 and K&L sucks ;) )

So the next step will be to fix the BR Drive for backingup my games (yea legally :P [at least in Germany {and if not, who gives a ******])
While searching for a drive i got the awesome idea to marry it w/ my Slim's (the at 3.60 [you may call me a *****.. but my dog got an erection and pushed the X button when the update-message appeard! inspired bei rrrboy159 ]) drive, back up all my games, and get it back to my Slim
I guess this should be possible..(?)

If marrying them doesn't work, (logic board matches/single lens/dual lens laser problems) you 'could' download your games, FTP them and use Gaia Manager 2.01+ for 3.55. One of my PS3's has this and of all the games (I have anyway) that require a disc for this manager are COD Black Ops and MK9, there may be more though. Incedentally, there are 'rumours' that 3.60 keys maybe just around the corner (if someone with the skills uses Mathieulh's hints) which 'could' mean 3.60CFW soon.
