PS3 reading external drive's free space incorrectly?
PS3 reading external drive's free space incorrectly? –

For some reason the small half terabyte external WD drive I have will on the PC READ about 368 GB OF FREE SPACE, yet the PS3 will only see about 60 - 70 GB? Trying to backup the system (in case it overheats) but can't because I need "more space'. I have PLENTY
I already have one backup on the drive (months ago), would that cause an issue? Could it be the internal hardrive of the PS3 is larger than the external (750 internal)?

Far as I know, no. I do have a Terabyte WD "MY BOOK" that is (that's used for the Wii . . . . .) The half terabyte has nearly nothing on it (20-30 GB) out of 500 GB.

Copy your stuff to a computer and format the drive.

This use to happen to me when I used my external harddrive. It would show that it hand like 19gigs left but it actually had 60+ I did a little messing around and found what was going on and why it was doing it and how it 'fix' it.
Lets say you have a 100gb external hardrive with 50gb with of files on it. 50 gigs of free space. You plug it in to your PC and delete 25gigs worth of files. Now it has 75gigs of free space, BUT if you plug it into the ps3 it would only show 50gigs of free space even tho you have 75. So the ps3 doesnt really pick up new freespace? But if you instead delete files on the external hdd from the playstation it
would show the ammount of freespace correcctly. So I think what I did was use multiman and put tiny bit more gigs of files then the
"freespace" said it had. Then deleted them. Simple, right? lol Yea, OR just format it but that deletes everything tho
Hope you understand what I said

When you delete something off the drive, when hooked to the pc, you have to empty the recycle bin. Then make sure you use the safely remove hardware icon to eject it. But like master said backup your files and format the drive should work.

Thanks, I had always wondered about this for the longest time - will try your method. I've deleted with multiman before but never checked afterwards because most of the time I would delete via pc and empty the bin.
