Noob question - sorry! 3.55 + PSN
Noob question - sorry! 3.55 + PSN –
08-18-2011,03:41 AM
I've bought a PS3 with 3.55 FW for my son, I've also purchased COD Black Ops which he wants to pla online.
All is being delivered tmorrow, I presume if he wants to acess PSN he'll need to allow the firmware to upgrade, I'd like to jailbreak the PS3 so I can play with it but I'm assumng that this wn't then be possible.
Is there anything I should do prior to putting it online for the first time that may alow me to downgrade/load CFW in the future?
Thanks (And sorry but I did search but didn't find anything about this).

If you want to play online you have to upgrade to 3.70 OFW. If you want use your jailbroken PS3 stay on CFW and don't update! There is a way to downgrade from 3.70 to 3.55 but it involves opening up your PS3 and whatnot. I would say first have some fun with the CFW and if you don't like it or PSN is too hard to resist : upgrade. But I would advise you to have some fun with the CFW first. COD online is just a bunch of kids grieving, teabagging and rage-quitting
. Jailbroken PS3's are hard to come by these days.
Good luck !

O.k. first you need to know that to go on-line you would require the latest firmware update issued by Sony which is 3.70. Then you would need a PSN account to login and play on line. Next if you want CFW you would need to downgrade via hardware flasher that is either Progskeet or teensy++, progskeet is recommended and CFW of choice would be KMEAW. Then you can easily downgrade and upgrade at will. But you would need some soldering skills before doing this. I highly recommend that you stick to CFW 3.55 rather than go online, because all emulators and applications developed are simply amazing.

Yes but that is only LAN. Not online playability.

if you want your son to have fun with Black Ops update it and/or buy a second PS3 (maybe without a BR-Drive) with 3.55 (I've paid 50€ for my second PS3)

The situation is this one. You can't access PSN unless you are in the latest firmware, which is 3.70. You can't have homebrew capabilities (CFW) on 3.70. The latest CFW is from 3.55 where you can't access PSN. However, some methods to get in were discovered earlier this year but Sony (if I'm correct) apparently patched all of them. So you gotta decide, either have CFW 3.55 and be able to use homebrew or upgrade to 3.70 and access PSN.
So basically, to "put it online" you need to upgrade, once you're in 3.70 you really can't downgrade to 3.55 easily, and I say easily because there are some methods to downgrade back again to 3.55 but they are really complicated and they require technical knowledge in general, technical knowledge of the PS3, to be able and know how to solder, a modchip (progskeet) or a development USB board (teensy++) and know how to work with them.
So you gotta decide.
To be (online) or not to be (online), that is the question.

That's great, sort of confirms what I thought, I guess it'll be down to how long he can play without going online with his friends (I suspect this will be measured in minutes!)
I'll take a look at the modchip and USB boards and see what is involved there.
Thanks again.
