To be honest, I'm new to this whole jailbroken/homebrew 'movement' and I really could care less about pirating or archiving games (30GB of hard drive space seems fairly excessive), but what really interests me are the homebrew applications, primarily being able to network my PS3 and it's blu-ray drive to my PC.

However, my greatest fear is essentially history repeating itself--just as Microsoft did to the Xbox, Sony will perform a mass purge of any tampered PS3. Considering this was a gift, and a can barely afford a new one myself, last thing I want to do is blacklist or brick my PS3.

Seemingly, it sounds like 'jailbreaking' a PS3 is safe enough, but it would be reassuring if someone could explain the process.

    Thanks in advance.

if you just want to jailbreak your ps3 to use homebrew and not pirate games seems fine to me. But if you dont want to be blacklisted i recomend downloading and installing Erase Me, http://psgroove.com/content.php?687-...e-Activity-Log But it may not be enough to keep your ps3 from being blacklisted.
ps. i have no proof of ps3 being blacklisted and i dont know if Erase Me will do the trick because i have not tried it yet due to my controllers breaking.

Although it may erase your logs and records on your, your PS3's, end, I'm curious to what extent Sony keeps track on their end.

Up to now there is no bulletproof method. If you are installing custom firmware you are going to take a risk. How low or high doesn't matter if the result will be a ban or/and deleting your account at the end. Maybe buy a second PS3 that works offline (network cable not plugged to the internet modem).

    And to make it clear:

STEALTH & Clearing LOGS have not been proved to be the solution! Even the XBOX have been working for years to get a good stealth mechanism.

Anyway, be prepared that you can be banned anytime (incl. deleting your PSN account) even after reverting back to OFW! Just remember that this is not the devs fault. It is yours to be so carefree. ;-)

NightmareLuffy - Couldn't have said it better myself. Love the tie in with xbox 360, I know a TON of friends that got baned when M$ decided to start logging for awhile without banning, then hit everyone at once.

To the OP, go on craigslist and pick up a phat for anywhere from $75 - $125, then mod that. The only "partially safe" way to mod your current box would be to do it and not go online for 6 months (ethernet disconnected) until we have an idea of what $ony might look for, and even then the prior modification might somehow be detectable.
