External HD formatted using PS3
External HD formatted using PS3 –
Has anyone ever tried using the ps3 to format a HD then use it externally?
how is this even possible? you...you..you cant do this man, no way...not yet
Why not?, pull internal hd, connect different hd, format whilst in ps3, remove hd and replace original, then connect freshly formatted drive to usb port.
It's been tried, doesn't work. The ps3 won't accept an external hard drive in any format other than FAT. Until someone bypasses that with a HV exploit it won't happen. They did that as an extra step do stop piracy; by limiting the external hard drive capacity and file size, they effectively limit the noobs pirating.
You could always snake your internal sata cable out to an external eSATA 3.5" 2TB drive that's externally powered, if you really wanted space like that. On top of that, once a program like xport360 comes out for the ps3, it'd be as easy as changing the sata cable from your ps3 to your pc, write the files you need, and swap it back. Been waiting on that one myself.
Thanks for you input blazie, been reading more about hd and it would not have worked anyway due to hd encryption
usb mount or detect not possible in ps3 native format .ps3 can only mount or detect usb with fat32 format.
Absolutely no way of doing that unless you can somehow pull up a command prompt which, btw, is never gonna happen.
Just stick to the normal way.
You would not need a command prompt, I gave up on this idea anyway, just one thing though how is everyone so sure that a ps3 would only read fat32 externally, anyone actually tried a decrypted ps3 drive externally? Just seems strange a ps3 would not read its own native filesystem.

Nah its still not possible, the function to mount the internal drive is higher above GameOS, which is what the system use to mount USB devices. In other words, someone needs to exploit gomerOS to allow mounting of other filesystems.
Don't Feed the Trolls.
