Hmmm I m gonna wait your results my friend...
It looks like it might be too much heat in my enclosed entertainment cabinet that was causing the hang. I removed the hub and the PS3 was still hanging. I rearranged the PS3 in the cabinet and played a couple of hours. The hanging hasn't showed up so far again.
*** More Update ***
My PS3 Slim is still hanging. I thought it has been resolved. But after playing a few hours yesterday...
1) Overheating caused by placement in enclosed cabinet. SOLVED - reorganize cabinet.
2) Corrupted internal hard drive (caused by hanging while writing to disk ??? ). SOLVED - fixed corrupted sectors using PC utility.
3) If hub is connected, chances of Slim hanging is high. If disconnected, low chance of hanging. PS3 did hang once while hub is disconnected, but I have not experienced a hang other than that one time while hub is disconnected.
I am not confident that this hub is not the cause 'til further testing. I'll buy the Nyko Media Hub Slim to see if that works better. If the Nyko doesn't work, I'll have to try a powered USB hub which I'm trying to avoid cuz I'll have to manually power down my USB external hard drive after turning off the Slim.
For those who want to give the Power A hub a try, it's available at Toys R Us in the US for $10. Local pickup in store. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index...FindSrc=search
I also see 1 reviewer in Best Buy claiming that his Slim was hanging while the hub was connected. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/POWER+A+...&skuId=9924215 (see page 2 in the review). But that's only 1 review that claimed a hanging issue with the hub.
*** UPDATE ***
I went to Toys R Us to see if I can exchange my Power A hub (just to see if mine was defective) for another one. They didn't have any in stock. They did however have the "PS3 Move Power Stand" made by DreamGear on sale, so I exchanged the hub for that. It has 4 non-powered USB ports, charging docks for 2 Dual Shock, 2 Move, and 2 Move Navigation controllers. The controllers are charged using the included A/C adapter. I took the chance and bought it. Lo and behold, the unit works with my external hard drive out of the box. No PS3 hanging so far, and it's been 4 hours of straight game play. The stand is available in Amazon for about $30. It's a little more than what I wanted to spend, but at least I found one that doesn't hang my PS3. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER
I am still undecided if I'm going to keep this though. Not sure since I prefer to have my PS3 sitting flat rather than standing up and I really want to try out the Nyko Media Hub Slim just to see if it works.
I also bought the Nyko Media Hub Slim to try. I ended up returning the item back to Amazon cuz my PS3 would hang with the hub installed...just like what happened with the Power A hub. So right now, I'm good with the Dreamgear PS3 Move Power Stand. My PS3 Slim hasn't hung once with this non-powered USB hub...and my external Western Digital Essential USB 3.0 2TB drive works great with it.
bit of th subject buty I've had a problem to with playing my ps3 in a cabinet what I done is Bought 2 120mm pc fans drilled 120mm hole on the back cut the molex adaptors of the fan then cut a usb cable up wired the fan up to the usb cable plugged it up to the ps3, the fans come on when the ps3 come on magic!
Just to add that i have exactly the same ps3 and exactly the same external hdd and i'm having the same issues. did you/anyone ever solve it?
