Hi guys, I am 100% new to the scene - I got hold of an old 60GB PS3 that was running 3.15, upgraded to 3.55 then to the Kmeaw 3.55 firmware. It appears to all work fine, however I've now installed 3 packages (ftp multiman and another loader) but when I run them from the xmb nothing happens it just goes black! Am I just missing something really simple, like needing a Bluray disc in the drive? Thanks for all your help in advanced.

Its everything ok with the console? is your bluray drive working ok and loading disk games?
If not, that is the problem. The logical board of the bluray drive must working fine for you to run homebrew.

If all is working, are you using the latest version of homebrew?
If you are using the latest version try to reinstall the fimware: go to recovery menu, install ofw 3.55, than go to recovery again and install kmeaw 3.55, then instal the package and all should be fine.

Wow thanks a lot! Unfortunately for me my Bluray drive is busted, I've ordered one off eBay but was hoping I'd be at least able to run an emulator or some PSN arcade games til then..is there anyway around needing the working bluray drive, or am I stuffed? :P

Why do you order a full new blu ray drive if it's only the blu ray logic board? You understand you will have to re-marry a new board to your console it won't work by simply putting in a new blu ray drive.

To be fair I don't know if it is the new bluray or logic board.

What I'm doing as we speak is removing the Bluray drive from the chassis to see what its doing when I put a disc in it.

Any hints on what I should be looking for to determine wether it is the drive itself or infact the logic board?

Hiya bud. I had EXACTLY the same problem. Here's a tip. This is how I got my groove back.

U won't even believe it, lol.

Turn ps3 on with bd rom connected, even broke.
    Boot homebrew app
    Black screen as usual
    Press eject on the console!

Then it boots the app, for me, and a couple friends. I have just the logic board now in my ps3, no laser or deck, as after 6 lasers, I'd rather not waste my cash any more.

Once home brew has booted, u only need to do the *eject* trick once until powerdown.

Let me know how u get on, if you decide to go the route of fixing the drive and getting a new board, I'd be interested how u get on, and if u still need to hit eject, lol!

    Sci.

Hey man, thanks a lot! I'll try it out once I put the PS3 back together..

I was still thinking about replacing a laser so I can watch BluRay films...as you've had 6 do you mind if I bother you for some more knowledge?

are they really that unreliable? lol very basic but I've never had a PS3 before. It's the 60GB model and I have seen a lot of people saying that they wont read discs ect..but if its gonna break like yours has several times I may be better off buying a BluRay player.

Is this method of hitting eject good for booting games from the harddrive/external USB? I'm assuming so or the PS3 would be pretty useless except for homebrew stuff but its always good to check.

    Thanks again!

    -------------------------EDIT------------------------------

I tried the eject technique, but unfortunately no joy.

I took the drive apart, and the laser seems to go a bluey red colour but the disc drive doesn't even spin. Could it perhaps be the motor?

Yes, I am a noob, but I am not stupid.

    Big up to Pereb27

For your drive to be fully working, both parts (logical board and drive) must be fine.
The "not spinning" problem could be either, from a problem within the drive, or a damaged logic board.
The "not running homebrew" problem its only because of the logical board.

I do have myself a ps3 with a non working bluray drive, but it loads homebrew fine as the logic board is ok

So there could be several reasons for the logical board not to be working:
    1) it's damaged - must be replaced, and then go to step 2
    2) it has been replaced but its not married - must be married using this procedure: http : / / psx-scene . com /forums/f118/possible-use-blu-ray-drive-cechg01-40-gb-ps3-ceche01-80-gb-ps3-96355/#post917549
    3) its not well connected - sometimes when you dismount the ps3 the clip wich holds the ribbon of the logic board is broken, and if you cannot connect it right it wont communicate with the motherboard and it wont work. solution: http : / / psx-scene . com /forums/f118/fixed-ps3-logic-board-broken-ribbon-94247/#post900614

If your drive loads and ejects disks fine, if the blue light of the drive stays on when disk is inserted, the logical board should be fine and communicating. Perhaps you'll need to do a remmarie of the drive (2). But ussually this only happens when you switch drives, and you should know what have been done with that console.

Dont know why I still cant post links... whatever...
