Wierd PS2 behavior =/

Well I just got a PS2 V4 from someone, and it reads the PS2 games fine no problem, reads Audio CDs no problem, reads DVD movies. All non backup.. it also reads backup audio CDs... however when I try to put in a Backup DVD movie it wont read. Wont do the auto boot thingie and when I click Browse CD after a while it gives Disc Read Error. I have tried both DVD-R and DVD+R burned at various speeds from 2x to 16x.

This PS2 is not modded so I cant test backup PS2 games. And I dont have any PS1 games to test it on.

any ideas whats up?

I'm pretty sure you need a mod chip to read the dvd backups period. I could be wrong though... I'm too poor and behind the times (no dvd burner) to try it.

ps2 can only play backup medias (except audio cds) if you have a modchip installed - period.

my other PS2 (non moded) plays backup DVDs no problem.. just like any DVD player will play DVD backups.

My v4 plays backup dvd movies just fine and swaps backup dvd games just fine. It sounds to me like you have a weak laser. The v4's are notorious for bad lasers and I've already had to replace mine.
