Sup fellas, my brother that knows nothing about moding ( not that I know alot myself ) tells me that his friend says that the laser dies because the mod was not done right, there might be some truth to that, but to be real i think they dead because its all burned out or some other natural cause,.. so whats your take on this fellas, i would like to hear what the pro's think about this,..

tell your friend he is an idiot... the laser dies because when you use burned games (usually on cheap media) and rips the laser works harder to read, and usually dies faster...

Even if a Neo mod(any type) is installed correctly it will fry your laser. Other than that mods are harmless.

    well yes and no... bighap...

The lasers (unless I am wrong) have built in AGC (automatic gain control) which is what I assume you are adjusting when you adjust the pots (lots of assumptions here).

This means that even with poor media - the laser will only be allowed to work a pre-set amount harder - and if Sony actually knows what they are doing - which one would have to assume they do - then that pre-set level would be well within the tolerences of the laser diodes and as such would not reduce the life of the laser by any noticable amount...

On the other hand - if you have to adjust the pots to get the laser to read a media type then all this goes out the window.

But as this is all based on assumptions and not actual hard facts... read charlie's post instead... and ignore my dribble

Yes, but the chip doesn't do the killing. Playing the backups do.

Right media kills lasers, not mods.

If mods killed lasers, just leaving your PS2 on for XXXXX hours, the laser should be dead even if you didn't play a single disc.

    Media kills lasers.
The Yellow PS2 auto-boots all. PS2, PS1 stealth and DVD movies.
