    Hi,

I was just updating my uLE and SMS apps and noticed that I have USB_MASS.IRX in my SMS folder of memory card slot 1.

I remebered that it is a some sort of USB support driver. Never the less I deleted it and I was still able to nagivate to USB flash drive with uLE and with SMS player.

    How come?

What's the exact purpose of USB_MASS.IRX and USBD.IRX?

As much information as possible please.

    Puh,... Erm,...

USBD.IRX = The USB-Connection-Driver, which initializes USB and recognizes connected devices.

USBM.IRX; USB_MASS.IRX; USBHDFSD.IRX (newest version of all) = USB-Storage-Devicedriver including support for the filesystem FAT32 (and other FAT-Variants in newest driver, but since only a very few apps use this version, FAT32 is recommented).

    Okay thanks.

So should I be having any of these files on my memory card slot 1? or are they just for some special tasks? if yes, which ones?

Most PS2 programs that need USB storage support include some version of both drivers embedded in the main program. This includes such programs as uLE, SMS and OPL, for example. (OPL even has two versions of both drivers, for use in GUI and in-game respectively)

But one important program which needs the drivers on MC if it is to be able to access files on a USB drive is FMCB. There was not enough free room in the FMCB kernel files to include the USB drivers, so these need to be loaded from the MC folder "mc?:/SYS-CONF/", and the proper filenames to use are "USBD.IRX" and "USBHDFSD.IRX". The latter of those files is a modern replacement for what used to be called "USB_mass.IRX".

    Best regards: dlanor
