What is PS2 DVD noise all about.
What is PS2 DVD noise all about. –

I have a v7, PS2 with a Messiah 1.33b. I used TDK DVD-R for a long time, and now I'm using Ritek G04 DVD-R. I think both are very good for DVD backup.
For CD backup I use TDK cds. However, with my PS2 I do expierence a lot of read noise. Nothing extreme, but still annoying, and louder than originals.
A thing about dvd and cd media. I still have yet to find the absolute report, on the absolute best media for the Xbox/PS2/PS1 Cd based games. Some say Verbatim, but doesn't it all boil down to reflectivity. Also, a lot of people swear by Ritek, for the Xbox. Is there a chart that shows the reflectivity of all medias? What's the reflectivity of Tdk/Ritek/Verbatim/etc?
What exactly causes read noise? Is it the laser head, going up and down the rail? Or is it something else? If this was the case, wouldn't just oiling up the rail make the noises disappear?
I have had my PS2 since approx winter 2002. I have been playing backups using the above media, since then.
Basically, I want to get rid of read noise. How do I do that?
I am also pondering the question of getting a new ps2 laser. At 43$ for a new one, I don't know. That is a third of a new console.
I did make some pot adjustments briefly a while back, along with cog adjustments to try fix red screens. However the red screens were the previous chip and not the ps2 laser, so I set ps2 laser back to it's original settings.
How does one get rid of read noise? Same goes for Xbox. What causes back up read noise there. I have a replacement Thomson drive, and am debating whether to put it in.
Also. What's with the FAQ, can't I just browse it. I was looking for a tut on oiling the rails/ cleaning the laser. I have cleaned the laser on occasion with q tip and 91% Isopropyl Alcohol. Help.

I'm no expert, but try a new laser. Sony did use cheap lasers in many of the Playstation 2 systems. Try looking here for a laser replacement

All PS2 lens makes squeaking noises. Especially if you use DVD-R/CD-R medias, those have very low reflection rate.

How do I get around this then. I'm trying to play Grand Theft Auto Vice City, and the noise is getting to me.

The GTA games CONSTANTLY STREAM DATA so the only way to prevent the noise is to play the game off HD with HD Loader.

Ok, Thx for the quick reply. I'm looking into getting a hard drive. Screw the DVDs. They are slow and they are noisy. Does PC use dvd streaming, no you install to hard disk. However, I can't find any all inclusive tutorials for PS2 Hard Drive stuff. Things like, how to install it, will it work with my Messiah modchip, will a Maxtor 120 Gb work with the network adapter, what programs I need, how to rip from PC, how to rip from PS2. I guess I just have to search, or do you guys know any good tutorials.

However, now my original Vice City is kinda loud. New laser? Or can I tweak mine. What do you guys suggest. I hate NOISE. It detracts from the expierence. Should I just screw the laser, get hard drive. Get new laser? Pot tweak? What would you guys suggest, because now, after 2 years, originals are starting to become noisy.
