In older video game systems it was common to classify a system by the number of bits on its main bus, but that doesn't really make sense any more.
The PS2 was marketed as a 128 bit system, but its Emotion Engine is really a 32 bit MIPS IV CPU with two 128 bit GPRs. This is obviously not a 128 bit processor, but marketing the product as 128 bit instead of 32 bit sounds a lot better.
Similarly, the Cell processor in the PS3 is built around a 64 bit PowerPC core, and uses 7 128 bit GPRs. However, I bet they will never market it as a 128 bit system because that doesn't sound like an improvement over the PS2.

Yea anyone remember the bitwars of the mid to late nineties? It appears those days are over; half of the population probably doesn't even know how all of this even works anyway.

but seriously, how much does any of us know about this any more

computing is now so complicated, just cpu's require their own section on explinations

and gpu's are now becoming more complicated then that

i under stand alot of the basics behind it, but ill be damned if i actually know how it really works

Reading current xbox360 specs it seems that it will be 32bit. They might or might not change it...

To me 64 seems more sensible, since the desktop scene has started to move towards it.

well you say its started to move towards it, its about 2 steps down the path

the proccesors support it, windows is finally 64 bit, but 99.9% of software is 32 bit, and for the forseeable future

some server software is 64 bit now, although the actualy differences ive herd about are negligable

WinXP X64 offers little to no performance difference in terms of everyday use. I ran it for a while on a eMachines M6810 laptop and it was just a load of trouble.
