I'm soon gonna buy a new ps2 (I'm a newbie).
But which version should I buy ? The gameshops in my city sell version 5/6 and 7.
Which one is better and what are the differences between their hardware ?
please help !

Well the newer the ps2, the better the laser unit is (older units have problems with them, and usually wear out their laser within a year or so). If I were getting a new ps2 now, I would buy it PRE-modded, so that I did not have to bother buying the chip and worry about installation later. Arguably, the very best chip around is the Messiah 2, but most experianced people will tell you it is superior to any chip out there. The Magic3 chips look good on paper, but they have many bugs, and some media dont work as well as others on them. I would reccommend the newest version of ps2 possible, with a Messiah 2 PRO inside of it. This may run you about $300-$320, plus shipping, depending on where you get it.
There are 'nomod' solutions to use a trick that runs backups without a modchip, but it requires a bootdisk such as gameshark, action replay, or swap magic. Most rips are too large of a file to work with these tricks, so you have to bother with patches for them. Also many new releases, especially kalisto releases do not work with swap magic, which is the only working bootdisk for the nomod swap trick on a v7 ps2.
Hope this helps you out...
happy gaming!
i'd go with the v7...not just for personal use, but also for the value if you ever need to sell it...you'd end up getting more out of the v7 than a v5
v5s supposedly have the best lasers, since v7s are tweaked not to like dvdr
v5 all the way

i think that statement is entirly right, i have a 3 year olf v1 and everything plays good, even dvd-rs boot first time everytime and same with everything elses.
as for the ver go for the v7
M2 boots way better than the magic 3 (ive seen first hand on v7 wit magic 3)
on mafic 3 stuff boots about 50 to 60% on my friends ps2 (v7)
Juss my .02
ALL ADVICE IS TAKEN AT UR OWN RISK!
actually any version that plugs up to your tv nd plays is worth getting.
don't forget u also want one tat works![]()
Not so sure about that,, I think the V7's react better across the board to dvdr. Plus, I think it's all in the burn.Originally posted by ThAD0oD

V5 and up, it doesn't matter. V5 and up all use the same lasers!! There are only 2 different styles between the models though, open style and closed style. Actually I just did a V3 refurb with a V5/V6/V7 closed style laser in it! It worked too!
Anyway, just get anything V5 and up. V5s have been around since 2 Xmases ago and there are very few reports of V5 and up dead lasers.
