Got another weird one I can't seem to solve. Got a v9 that doesnt read cd/dvds - i get the playstation disc screen with enter and back on, I dont even get a DRE. Replaced the laser with a new ♦400C, now it only reads music CD's. Still doesnt read psx, ps2, movies. I've been fiddeling with those white wheels at the back of the ps2 for the last 2 hours - not getting anywhere. Could this be a v9 syndrome problems - the LA chip? It reads music cds fine so im not too sure.

Hi kl1k , Not sure if this will help you but I had a v12 with exactly the same symptoms (playstation disc screen on everything except music cd. no rsod)
After changing lasers , etc etc . for a few hours trying to fix it , it stopped working altogether. I then discovered that the ps17 fuse had blown. While inspecting the fuse I noticed a solder splash very close to the fuse.It wasn't touching the fuse but was close by. I removed the piece of solder and fixed the fuse and the machine hasn't missed a beat since (with the original laser).I think the solder splash was loose and moving around in there causing trouble. I know it was on a v12 and your problem is a v9 but it may be worth a look for a solder splash somewhere.(It was bloody small).
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers Cleo

Thanks - I'll check the fuses as well. Didnt occur to me that it could be a fuse as music cd's work.

Yeah , Me too . But I don't think it was the fuse that was causing the problem in the first place. I think it must have been that solder splash somehow?? The blown fuse that occurred later just led me to the solder splash (I never would have spotted it otherwise) I think it must have moved while I was mucking around with the console and then caused the fuse to blow. ??? But the symptoms were exactly the same as yours and now it's working fine. Have a close look.
    Cheers

No such luck. All fuses check ok. Can't find any solder splashes. Its not modded so i doubt its a solder splash, but I cleaned the mobo as well. Still doesnt work. Another ps2 for the junk pile
