  1. #1 V7 the makes noise when reading discs.

I have a PS2 v7 with Ripper 2 modchip and newly bought a unmodded v9. I have notices before that my v7 is little noisy when playing, both originals and back-up, games but the v9 is almost whisper quitet playing the same original discs. The v7 is working perfect on all back-ups and has never give an read error while reading the discs but it is making a little clicking/clanking noise when it's reading the discs a lot, like in GTA:VC when driving the car. I think it always has made a little noise when reading the discs but I think it's a little bit louder now.

What is it that can make the noise? Can it be the disc motor or is it a mechanical noise when the laser moves back and forth? It works fine now but it would be interesting to know if I can fix it.

As I said, it is a little bit noisy when playing both originals and back-ups. It's no difference in the noise if it is original or back-ups.

My PS2 (version 4) does almost the same thing. I notice sometimes when i put in my swap magic CD version disk it will sometimes give me the clicking noise a couple times and then the laser goes into like a high powered mode where i can see the laser through the disk (looks cool watching the laser try to read the disk) and then i'll get a disk read error. But then i reset and it does completely different, it boots the game. I can pretty much tell when it will and will not work by the way it's spinning and the noices it makes.

Noisy lasers are incredibly common in 'older' consoles. They do this both with/without a chip installed, so that's hardly conclusive. The sounds are definately the laser unit trying to adjust and focus. IF it cannot focus quickly, the sounds multiply.

I wouldn't sweat it guys. Since it happens with originals as well, what can you do??? Just the usual... keep the laser clean, and make sure your originals/copies are in good shape.

When you say laser runners, do you mean the 2 long metals bars that is holding the lens?
