v3 laser - not reading original dvd movies, but reads backups perfectly –

Just wondering if anyone could suggest something that I could try with this v3 PS2. It boots backup games perfectly, but while watching most original dvd movies, the movie will skip and drop frames pretty bad.
I tore it apart really quick last night and messed around with the azumith and the cog wheel, but it didn't seem to help. As far as I think, if it can pick up a backup dvd-r that well, it shouldn't have any troubles with an original dvd movie.
Any suggestions?
BTW - it has a Duo(2?) chip installed, but I'm disabling it in order to test the dvd movies.

check if the dvd movie is scratched....or why dont you just run it on something else.

Sorry,... I was in a bit of a hurry when I posted that. It's actually a customer's PS2 and this is what he uses to watch his dvd movies (I assume he doesn't have a dvd player).
I meant to mention that the backup games (dvd-r) will boot on the first screen, whereas the dvd movies (not scratched or anything like that) go to the second 'Browser' screen with the swirling electrons and it takes a little bit before it detects the movie and starts playing it.

The modchip is in 'disabled' mode, so I would think it shouldn't affect anything. I tried tying a cap on the SCEX line (alĂ* the old Neo installs), but it made no difference. I'm at a loss as to why this machine would do this...
