    Hi Det1
With the motherboard completely removed, check the 6508 chip for continuity between the legs of the chip.Only pins 3 & 4 should show continuity, they actually go to ground, as do the big center legs of course.Anything other pins connected or grounded means your chip is shot.

sorry, should of been more clear.Pin 22 is ground as well.

What you need to check,if you haven't allready, is if you have continuity between between adjacent legs,4 to 5 ,5 to 6,and so on.

Usually when the 6508 fails, legs are grounded or welded together.

BTW,will this thing still play cd's, or nothing at all?

This syndrome is very common here in Brazil with the use of crappy chips, although it does happen very rarely with unmodded stations too. The real cause is yet unknown.

The problem is in a resistor bank located in the back of the mobo close to the IOP. There are 3 resistor banks of 8X43ohms. One of them is ruined, problem is if you measure them from side to side they are ok, will read 43 ohms. You should check them side by side, they should give a very high value between resistors. Any low value or short, and you should replace that bank.

    Hope it helps
