i am thinking of getting a slim ps2, and i am wondering whether the usb hdd would make the games even slower than playing them using dvd drive.

    thanks

Let's see, if I have my USB 1.1 speeds correct then the DVD-ROM will read quicker.

USB 1.1 - 1.5 megabytes per sec theoretical maximum
    4X DVD-ROM - 5.4 megabytes per sec theoretical maximum
ATA-33/66 - 33/66 megabytes per sec theoretical maximum

    toma,

what are you saying is that the usb ports on ps2 are usb1.1 not usb2.0?
if ps2's usb port is indeed v1.1, then wouldn't the movies be skippy & the loading time is super slow to be considered as useful?

Yep, I'm pretty sure all PS2 models only have 1.1 ports. It's not really worth it, but your laser will still get a break.

If you really have to have a hard drive, look up the IDE addon. spedmetal was selling some a few weeks back.

thank you (especially) toma & varagorn for your info.

maybe usb2 was not either ready when sony launched ps2 or sony was afraid of usb2 hard disk drive ;-)

i think usb2 not needed... sony planned it to use with usb keyboard and mouse, or some similar devices, which do not need usb2 speed at all..
