I have recently acquired a PS2 Slim v17 (I think...) and I wondered how to use a USB controller on it (dual stick, 16 button, same as official PS controllers), or which games support them - if it's possible at all. Then again, if it wasn't possible, what on earth the USB ports are for?

Just post the SCPH and maybe the datecode and we know it + you will know it for sure then, too.

Not at all, since they do not support USB-Game-PADs.
You know,... Sony want to make money with PS2-Controllers, beeing them original from Sony, or licenced by Sony.

or which games support them if it's possible at all.
No games support that at all.
It probably would be possible to write a driver, which could be 'hooked In-Game' much the same way as OPL does it for the CDVD&FS-Driver, or the VMC-Support.

Then again, if it wasn't possible, what on earth the USB ports are for?

There is an option about 'saving pictures to USB-devices' (or something like that), in there...

You can also use it for update/map storage in Socom 3. Too bad Killzone didn't do that, the update is huge.
