    Hi there!
A little question to all the great coders here on PSX-SCENE: Would it be possible to write a small program that lets you use your USB-controller as controller in port 1/port 2? I'm thinking of something similar to OPL, which hoaxes the PS2 in that way that it thinks the data comes from DVD but is streamed from LAN/USB/HDD. So, with a little config file that tells the little middleman-program which USB-button should be mapped to the PS2 ones, one can use his/her great USB-stick instead of the cool PS2-controllers...

Such a gamepad 'emulator' should be possible to implement, but the big question is if it would also be worthwhile.

Doing it properly, so that it will work with most games will demand either one of two approaches:

1: Like some other utilities such as GSM the new gamepad emulator could hook into some system vectors and try to ensure that a modified gamepad access method is used at all times. But this will be very tricky to do with software intended to run without any USB drivers, or intended to use conflicting USB drivers. There is also a serious risk that the RAM area used for the resident code will conflict with other similar usage, such as by GSM, OPL, or cheat engines.

2: The best way to do it would probably be to integrate it with a game loader such as OPL, but even then it would have many dubious effects, such as adding to the resident routines and thus consuming additional IOP RAM needed by the games, as well as increasing the number of system hooks and thus raising the risk of games being incompatible, possibly no longer able to run.

My own evaluation is that while such gamepad emulation is possible, it is not worthwhile.

My main motivation would be using an arcade stick over the USB port. So this would mainly be used to play oldschool Fighter games like the KOF series, the NeoGeo gamecollection and some other oldie selections available for the PS2 (e.g. Capcom, Taito, Atari collections). Since this games are better played with an arcade stick and the native PS2 sticks are either rare or useless such a converter would be great in my eyes...

I understand why you want it, but I don't think it will happen. As I see it there are too many hassles and too little gain for someone to invest programming work in it.

But a physical converter is another thing, and would not suffer from any of the problems that a software converter would be plagued by, as stated in my earlier post. A hardware converter could allow a PC gamepad or joystick to be plugged into a USB port of that converter, with a normal PS2 gamepad connector plugging it into the PS2.

But that too would be a major project, so unless someone already did it, I don't really expect that to happen either.
