    start out step by step,

Q1. how can i add jpeg pics to my game icons in OPL?

A1. there is a thread in the OPL sub-forum specifically dedicated to your question.

Q2. how can i make a digital copy from my original game disc? how can i play it on my PS2? what dvd media can i use and at what speed do i burn it? what game loaders are there for me to pick from?

A2. search the PS2 game back-up sub-forum. also do a keyword search for ESR.

Q3. can i play back up games on a slim PStwo v18 (scph-9xxxx) with a later date code than 8C?

A3. fmcb (homebrew program loader) is not compatible with the v18 slim PStwo that has a date code later than 8C (check your date code on the black sticker). v18/8C PStwo has the bios v2.30 which blocks total access to fmcb. you basically need a method to load homebrew in order to run back-ups games ect. fmcb, swap magic, mod chip, and the swap trick are the only methods to do so.

A whole thread with uLaunchELF not mentioned even once, neither in questions nor in replies...

This definitely does not belong in the uLaunchELF forum, so I am moving it out to "PS2 General Discussion".

The OP is asking for general help in how to use an already modded console, without any specific mention of the modchip itself, so "General" is where this thread belongs.

    Best regards: dlanor

Yes, you can make homebrew CDs of arbitrary content as you please.

Some prefer to have separate discs for different applications (though I see that as wasteful), while others prefer to collect many homebrew applications on a single disc, using uLE as its main boot elf and acting as a launch desktop for all of the others.

This can even be done with a multipage skin setup to allow for more elfs than the available quick-launch shortcuts in a single menu page allows for. (You can have up to ten pages, with normally 11 but maximally 13 shortcuts per page, so the absolute maximum is 130. And for a single menu page the maximum is 14 shortcuts (as you dont need 'Configure' on CD/DVD).

But composing such discs is not very simple to do well, so I think it is best done by those already well familiar with the program.

It is much easier to just install your favourite elfs to folders on MC or USB drives, and then launch those program elfs from those folders using uLaunchELF (aka: uLE) to do so. For elfs of permanent interest it makes best sense to configure uLE to have fixed entries for those elfs in its menu, so you can launch any one of them at any time (in that uLE menu) by a single gamepad button press. And for elfs of less permanent interest you can simply use the FileBrowser to seek them out wherever they are stored, and launch them from there.

For such cases it even makes sense to browse to "host:" (a networked PC running PS2ClientLoader or RadHostClient), so as to launch an elf from there, without having to copy it to any PS2 storage device.

For non-disc-based usage it is best to have a modchip with DEV1 support, so that you can boot uLE directly as "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF". But for a modchip that only supports booting from burned discs, this can be simulated by preparing a boot disc for uLE which has on it a "LAUNCHELF.CNF" file containing an entry like "LK_auto_E1 = mc:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF", and another row entry like "LK_auto_timer = 0".

Booting that disc will then cause the instance of uLE booted from the disc to load its CNF file from that disc, and then in obedience to it immediately launch the elf "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF" (or "mc1:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF") which is the standard location and filename used for DEV1 booting. And this secondary instance should have its own "LAUNCHELF.CNF" file either in the "/BOOT/" folder or in the "/SYS-CONF/" folder of the same MC.

The effect is that you get indirect DEV1 boot support via that uLE boot disc.

And the recommended elf for "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF" is of course another instance of uLE, which you can then use exactly as if it were DEV1 booted, including how other standard homebrews may use if for exits (such as both OPL and SMS can do).

    Btw: Isn't it typical...
Just when I have moved a thread that doesn't mention uLaunchELF at all away from that forum, then all of a suddent uLaunchELF becomes its main topic...

    Best regards: dlanor
