Total noob looking for help

I tried looking through the tutorials section but it kept throwing up database errors.

Anyways I'm a total newb to Ps2 modding, and I want to buy an old ps2 and mod it so I can play imports and backups, since I regularly degrade my discs to unreadable status.

I'm used to xbox modding, so I'm wondering are there bios I need to flash to the chip that I install? Also I know you can load games onto a Hdd if you have one installed, but is there anything I need to do to setup the drive? Any special apps that need to be used to read backups from the HDD?

I'd appreciate it if someone could point me to some tuts on this kidna stuff.

search the forum! look into the hdd section for your hdd question.. and search for crystal chip or matrix infinity..

Anyways, some chips do need to be flashed, I personally know of the D M S chips and the infinity chips that do, some don't, for instance like the duo2se chip. These are the chips that I am use to, and the ones I know for sure, if you do need to know more, just try searching in the right area, the ps2 mod section, you will find what you need in there, probably the first couple of pages of posts.

The hdd question is something I am not really into either, to be honest. I know that hdloader and hdadvance are both programs that use the hdd to put games on the ps2, but I wouldn't doubt that there is something a little newer out now, or very soon, these programs don't hold a candle to the setup of the xbox and pxhddloader.

Good luck with everything and do lots of research, modding a ps2 is much more difficult than the xbox. It is pretty much like a dozen of the little d0 points on some of the ps2 versions. If you want the easiest version to mod, go with a version 5-7, stay away from the version 9- 11 and the earliest versions, as they are a little tougher. If you do a version 9-11, don't forget to do the romeo mod.
