I have a V7 PS2 with Magic 3.1. Made a back up copy of everquest online and it boots, but when I try to get online it says connecting, then it says Verifying DNAS. Ends with an error
(-402). Call Sony at blah blah blah or email. If I shut down the chip by holding reset the original boots fine, but if the chip is on even the original fails. I guess the sleep mode isn't a true sleep mode on the magic 3.1. I was thinking of adding a switch to put the chip in reset mode. Does anyone have everquest online? Have you tested the Magic 3.1 with switch using Everquest online? I want to know if it will work since this chip is supposed to sleep but is still detectable. I fear opening up that ps2 for the 5th time I may FUBAR something. Less time in there the better.

    Thanks

I think it detects both whether you have a chip on and if you have a backup. If either one it returns an error. You must have both your chip turned off and the original in the drive.

I think your right, check out this article I found.
    http://ps2.ign.com/articles/363/363078p2.html
it says that it checks both, I wonder if you time it right and turn off the chip at the right time or turn it back on at the right time to fool the DNAS authentication server.

Hope they make a mod chip that can fool this. So again hope to hear from anyone who has tried Everquest Online.

yes it is about final fantasy XI, however it is also about DNAS. Which is how sony is checking your system if its modded. Knowing how to read and understanding what you read are very different animals. Any ways someone private messaged me and said to try and wait 5 minutes before attempting a connection to the server I did a 90 second wait the first time, supposedly the chip is supposed to sleep after 90 seconds. This did not work. Someone suggested trying to wait 5 minutes before connecting this still did not work for me. Has anyone tried a switch to see if that fools the DNAS or does it double check the disc and then to see if there is a mod.
Here is the error screen that pops up.

    Authentication error (-402)

A machine information error has been detected.

Please write down the error code number and contact customer service at 1-866-466-5333, or by email at online support@playstation.sony.com

So far, if I disable the chip and boot with the original I can get in every time. I disable the chip by holding the power button for 4 seconds. I think I'm ok since its going through my router, I doubt that it can get the mac of my ps2 ethernet card. I can always change my mac Address on my router. Anyways still want to know if anyone is able to get in using the switch mod to disable the chip once you have booted with the back up copy.
