stumped about a laser problem.
stumped about a laser problem. –
i can't figure it out, so maybe someone else can.
laser was cleaned
laser lights up
ps2 powers on
ps2 goes to browser and can read memory cards without a problem and controllers work fine
unit was never dropped or otherwise mishandled
pots were never tinkered with
ps2 was showing no signs of problems previously(no slow loading, wierd noises, or anything)
ribbon cables all properly attatched, no wires loose.
ok, so i turn the ps2 on and it appears to work fine. i insert any disc(retail cd, retail dvdm, burned dvd, whatever), hit reset(it's got a magic 3.1) and nothing happens. the laser just spazzes out in one place making a bunch of noise attempting to read the disc, but fails.
so i take it apart, check all of what i mentioned above, and pull the drive cover off. i see that the plastic tap on the laser unit that sits on the worm gear is intact, so that isnt it. i do notice that both the worm gear and the rail next to the gear are bone dry with no lube, and the rail to the left has lube but is filthy.
so would i be correct in assuming that those rails just need disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated?
(and no this isn't my ps2, it's a friend of mine and he doesn't know who else to ask about it and he's hoping a $5 tube of lube will fix it)
edit: oh yea, forgot to mention that it's a v6

come on, someone here has to have some idea.
ok, tried cleaning and greasing the rails, still wont read anything.
Spazzes out in one place? sounds like the exact same problem I had. If you look at the laser activity, and if I'm correct, the laser will move to the outer edge of the cd/dvd sled and will just spaz out, right? HAPPENED TO ME and I was sad until I replaced the mobo and redid the mod.
Your ps2 mobo seems screwed. Try the laser unit on another ps2. It should work. This will confirm your problems. Happened to some other guy on this forum with a v4 a long time ago.
no it doesnt move to the edge of the disc. anyway, as i said i greased the rails and now the laser seems to move back and forth like it should. now tho, the lens just moves up and down and refuses to read the disc. it sees a disc is there, it just wont read it.
and i would just swap the laser, but i dont have another unit around to test it with.
plus i cant imagine the mod install working fine for months and then suddenly the motherboard needs replaced.
sorry i didn't know the laser was moving alright
mine just jammed at the edge of the sled
