Yes. Sony recently stated PS2 production would end at their fiscal year's end, which is in the fall. I have no sources because this is extremely recent, and I guess you could just call sony at (800) 345-7669 and ask.

And yes, cell text is not a good way to get attention, it will only get you the wrong kind..

Well, this sucks. I really hoped that such a successful console would be produced for a little bit longer. Especially that they launched a new model not that long ago. Too bad.

Well ffgriver, with all due respect, i'd say ps2 has lasted long enough. It has surpassed xbox and gamecube and id say a ways into the "3rd" gen of consoles. Although it would be nice to see it last longer. I would have to say it did an amazing job of lasting and its time has come.

still there are quite a lot of ps2s circulating on second-hand market. it's not a big problem to get one in case your console fails. for now, that is.

i perceive ps2 as the most successful console ever. not only because of the games, but also because of the really well-designed architecture, that proved its worth overtime.

psx games are doing good - there are lots of emulators around. sony is not planning to allow you play your ps2 games for free on ps3 anymore.

i suspect that sony is worried that ps2 is still standing and might hold back ps3.

bleh. Nothing beats playing ps1 games like the original console.

being able to fast-forward the boring parts (especially gf animations in ff8) on the emulator definitely beats any advantage the ps1 has, even if playing games on original console "feels" better (it does).
