Sony to start Cell production in 2005
Maybe something for the frontpage?
article from arstechnica
It says that sony is going to start the production of cell in 2005, and also that there will likely be several versions of ps3, depending on the amount of cell chips.
Sony Corp, the world's second-largest consumer-electronics maker, will mass produce its next-generation chip for PlayStation game consoles and other audiovisual products starting in the latter half of 2005, a company official said.
Sony will install a test production line for the so-called "Cell" chip at a plant in Nagasaki prefecture as a first step, Kenshi Manabe, chief technology officer at Sony's game unit, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. told an industry meeting in Yokohama.
I dont think this will be good, I mean, microscoft is trying to make a console out of a pc and sony is trying to make a pc out of a console! I think that the whole idea about consoles is to not to have to upgrade if you want to play better games. if this was to happen like stated in the article, the games buisness will never be the same again.
So what I'm thinking is that Sony may very well sell different levels of PS3, or at least offer devices capable of playing PS3 games at varying levels of quality at different price/performance points. For instance, just to take some numbers at random, they might offer a PVR + PS3 combination with two Cell chips for $500, a stand-alone PS3 with four Cell chips for $500, a PS3 Extreme with eight Cell chips for $700, and so on. Depending on the number of Cell chips available in the hardware, games will look better or worse.
