Even if you did have a 25w, it'll work just fine.

Generaly the cooler the iron the better with SMDs. I regularly use my butane soldering iron which it's lowest temp is roughly equivilent to 25 watt, but I also work with small crap like this allot so I don't overheat/melt something. The less experienced you are though the more better it is to goto 15watt because your far less likely to mess something up from the heat.

Your far better of getting yourself a decent iron such as the ESD safe Hakko 936 temperature controlled unit. That is of course if your doing a lot of units. If your not doing too many, then its porbably hard to justify the cost. As I am a tv tech, i use mine for a lot more than just PS2/Xbox work. But its very nice to be able to choose from a big variety of tips.

scrape the via gently to get thru the coverlayer on the board, if you got flux add some, take your wire and dip in flux (if you got any) then take some solder on the irontip and put your wiretip to it so it get soldered up.
now put some heat on the via and add some solder.
then heat up the solder again on the via and attach the wire.

This is my way of doing it, there probebly is about 1000 ways to do this right.

but the most inportant to remember is to add solder to your wire first.
    And to scrape the via.

Is it safe to scrape the via with a sharp knife ? Also for the chip legs on the motherboard all I need to do is pre tin the wire and then just heat up the wire and let the solder melt on to the chip legs correct ?
