Don't mean to hijack your thread, Mark........but I can report that a new laser has solved my problem and may solve yours as well,

Unfortunately, though, I am sad to report that the merchant for the first laser I purchased has refused to respond to all attempts at contact. I have since installed a new laser acquired from a different supplier and all is well with the console. The original merchant was Rich's PSX Parts so be careful when ordering from there. Second time I've gotten a bad laser from him and this time he refuses to respond to any contact attempts to refund or exchange. Beware Rich's PSX Parts.
