how can you tell the different models of slimline ps2, also if i get a h20 what other mods are necessary for the slim ps2 other than the h20 chip

you can get some idea from the serial number and also where the warranty sticker is.
the v12 had warranty on back so you could take screws out without removing sticker,
v13 and 14 have it on the bottom covering 1 screw, this is not a perfect science but a good indicator, to know for sure you need to open and check the board number and layout.

the h20 needs nothing else it has the v12 fix on board but if you have a v14
you need the orange dot h20

also what the orange dot version of h20, how is that different to the standard

the orange dot is just updated to support v14, otherwise it will only work up to v13, I think there was a thread on this site somewhere with different layouts and serials, might need to do some searching, if I find it I will put a link here
